Up the hill from the Alcazar are the ruins of the San Francisco Monastery. This was obviously a very large complex. The two earliest religious orders in Santo Domingo were the Franciscans (1502) and the Dominicans (1510).

         Next to the monastery was the Church and Hospital of St. Nicholas (1503), the first hospital in the New World. This old photo shows St. Nicholas hospital in 1908.

         Another important monument to visit is the Convent of the Dominicans (circa 1517).

         Next to the Convent is the oldest university in America, La Universidad de Santo Tomás de Aquinas (1558). They taught medicine, law, theology and philosophy.

         The Church of St. Lazarus had the third hospital in Santo Domingo. It was for the victims of leprosy.

         La iglesia de San Lázaro tenía el tercer hospital en Santo Domingo. Era para víctimas de la lepra.

and the church of the Jesuits. The drawing on the RD$20 Peso bill provided the best perspective I could get of this church. It is now the National Pantheon, where historical figures are buried.
